Then Shinylocks the Brave’s brother was removed from prison, and the wedding of Shinylocks the Brave and the princess, the Red King’s daughter, began. As I was told, the joyous festivities lasted for three weeks. And they lived happily ever after.

And now as I mount to depart on the horse’s mane, I hope I told you this story very well.

THE TALE OF THE WHITE MOOR

(HARAP ALB)

Recorded and reworked in 1877 by writer Ion Creanga

Once upon a time, there was a king who had three boys. This king had an older brother, named the Green King, reigning in a faraway kingdom. Both kingdoms were spread on two sides of the earth, surrounded by desolate lands.

The Green King did not have any boys; he only had girls. Old and ill, the Green King decided to write to his brother, asking him to send any one of his sons to his kingdom and he promises to grant the throne to that one who reaches his court. When he got his brother’s letter, the king called for his three sons and told them what was written in their uncle’s letter.

“Who among you feels skillful enough to reign over such a great and rich kingdom? I will allow you to go to pursue the last will of your uncle.”

The eldest son came forward and said, “Father, I think I should be receiving this honor because I am the eldest one among my brothers. Therefore, please let me go. Give me money, clothing, weapons, and a horse to ride, and I will leave without any delay.”

The king agreed with his request, and the eldest son prepared himself for his departure, kissed his father’s hand in respect, said good-bye to his brothers and, full of hope and joy, embarked on to the journey.

The king wanted to test his son’s courage. He secretly disguised himself in a bearskin, and riding his horse very fast, he hid himself under a bridge. When the eldest prince was about to pass over that bridge, a growling huge bear came out in front of him. The prince’s horse jumped back two feet, snuffling and almost wiping the ground with his rider. Scared to death, the prince returned home.

“Why did you come back so fast, my dear son? Did you forget anything?” asked the king, who was back to the castle before his son was. “This is not a good sign.”

“I did not forget anything, Father,” the prince answered. “While trying to pass the bridge, a huge, ferocious bear came out from under the bridge. This bear scared me terribly. I hardly escaped his cruel, long, sharp claws. That’s why I took the way back home. I do not want to be eaten by wild animals. I am not interested in being a king.”

“If you say so, I agree with you,” said the king. “Not everybody can be a king. However, what are we going to do now in order to fulfill your uncle’s request?”

“Father,” said the second-born son, “I’ll go to our uncle’s kingdom if you allow me to.
